The Chief Justice of India has written to the Centre, seeking information on its stand on senior Lawyer Saurabh Kirpal’s elevation as a Judge of the High Court of Delhi.
Saurabh Kirpal’s name was recommended for elevation in 2017.
In a letter to Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, CJI SA Bobde sought additional inputs on Saurabh Kirpal so that a final decision could be taken soon on his elevation, sources said.
However, this is not an official recommendation of the SC Collegium to the Centre, these sources added.
In a meeting on March 2, the Apex Court Collegium had reportedly deliberated on the matter but deferred its decision until it received more inputs from the Centre.
This was the fourth time a decision on Saurabh Kirpal’s elevation was deferred ever since his name was unanimously recommended by the Delhi HC collegium in Oct 2017.
After the recommendation of the Delhi HC collegium, the intelligence agencies had red-flagged Saurabh Kirpal’s elevation saying that his partner, who is a foreign national, may pose as a “security threat”.
